Montacute House
Construction of Montacute House
began in the 1590s and it was completed in 1601. Built out of
Ham Stone, quarried at nearby Ham Hill, it was commissioned by
Sir Edward Phelips, the Speaker of the House of Commons and Master
of the Rolls. The house is E shaped in deference to Queen Elizabeth
I. The Long gallery on the 2nd floor is at 172ft the longest surviving
gallery of its period in England. Hung there are paintings from
the National Portrait Gallery depicting figures from the Tudor
and Jacobean Courts. The House is now owned by the National Trust.
