The Parish Church
of St. Catherine, Montacute
The church of St. Catherine of
St. Alexandria was built on the monks burial ground of the adjacent
Cluniac priory. The original Norman chapel built around 1170 was
enlarged in the 13th Century with the addition of the nave and
north porch with transepts added in the 14th Century. It is thought
that the nave was rebuilt and lengthened, windows inserted and
the tower added in the 15th Century. Much of the church was rebuilt
1870-1871 leaving only the tower and porch as they were.
The Chancel Arch is one of the
few remaining Norman features of the Church
Memorials
to the Phelips Family of Montacute House
in
the north Transept. The earliest dates from 1484
