The Village

The derivation of the name Powerstock or the previously used name Poorstock is not clear. It is likely that a village with a similar name existed before the Norman conqest. The names Povrestoch and Povrestoca can be found in the Domesday Book.

Two views of the house in "Church Street" which was occupied in 1891 by my great great grandparents Isaac and Susannah Gale when interviewed by the vicar in his village census of 1892. The outbuilding to the right of the house was in use then as Isaac's "carpenter's shop". Today the house is occupied by a distant cousin, also a descendant of Isaac and Susanna, and her husband.
